The Netherlands has competed in the Contest 63 times, making its debut as one of the seven countries competing in the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. It has missed only four contests so far.
It has won the Contest five times: in 1957, 1959, 1969 (a joint winner with France, Spain and the United Kingdom), 1975 and 2019 - the latter ending a 44-year wait and tying it with France, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom for number of victories.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Top 10 finishes were achieved by artists such as Bernadette, Marcha, Gerard Joling, Humphrey Campbell, Ruth Jacott and Edsilia Rombley.
Since the introduction of the semi-finals, the county has reached the final on eight occasions - in 2004 with Re-Union, from 2013 to 2019 - the latter giving them their first win since 1975 - and 2022. The country had eight consecutive non-qualifiers up to and including 2012 which is a Eurovision record and is currently ranked 11th in the list of countries with the most points awarded through the years.
The country has hosted the Contest five times: in 1958, 1970, 1976, 1980 and 2021. The first three times were after winning the previous year, while the 1980 Contest was staged in the country after Israel (who had won the previous year) declined to organise the event for a second consecutive year. For the same reason the country declined the right to organise the 1960 Contest. It also hosted the 2021 Contest as the previous year was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It debuted in the inaugural Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, finishing in 11th place. It has participated a further twenty times with its best result coming at the 2009 Contest in Kiev when it scored its first and only win so far. As of 2023, it is the only country to have participated in every edition of the Junior contest.
