Jahn Teigen was a Norwegian singer, musician and comedian who started his career in the 1960s with the release of a few singles before hitting the big time commercially the following decade as part of the rock band Popol Vuh, who released several singles and albums and performed at several music festivals.
While still part of the band he took part in several national finals, with Anne-Karine Strøm being selected to perform his song "The First Day of Love" in Brighton in the 1974 Contest before he finally won the right represent his home country four years later in Paris with the song "Mil etter mil", which is famously remembered for its over-the-top performance, resulting in the first ever Nul Points for any country under the current voting system. However, it remains his most popular song.
Along with singer Anita Skorgan, who he married in 1984 and divorced in 1987, he returned to represent his home country four years later in Harrogate, which finished in 12th place with 40 points, just nine points behind the entry by The Duskeys of Ireland.
He returned to the Eurovision stage just one year later to perform the Anita Skorgan-penned song "Do Re Mi", which emerged as his most successful entry by finishing in 9th place with 56 points. Skorgan also appeared as a backing singer for the performance. This meant that she and Jahn between them appeared at every single Contest final from 1977 until 1983 except 1980, namely six times in seven years.
Aside from his multiple appearances in the Norwegian national final, which lasted until 2005 and saw him set the record for the most participations - fourteen times between 1974 and 2005 - and also appearing as an interval act, he provided the commentary for the 1991 Contest in Rome.
Altogether, he released seventeen studio albums up to 2006 and soon moved to Sweden where he died on 24 February 2020 at the age of 70.
