Australia has participated in the Contest five times, debuting in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 as an automatic qualifier for the 60th anniversary celebrations. Following their positive reception, it was decided that they should be allowed to participate full time and so far they have qualified for the final twice and achieved their best result at the 2016 Contest when their representative Dami Im finished as runner-up having won the televote.

It is the first country from the Oceania region (and the second country outside Eurasia, after Morocco in 1980) to participate in the Contest. It was originally decided that should they ever win, one of the Big Five nations will host the Contest the following year. However, since then it has been revealed that if they win they will host the Contest in Europe.

The country also debuted at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Sofia, where entrant Bella Paige finished in eighth place. Since then they have had three Top 5 results with two third place results at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 and the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 respectively.
