Ajda Pekkan is a Turkish singer who musical career began in the early 1960s when she appeared in a nightclub as a member of the music group Los Çatikos. After becoming an actress and starring in several films, she embarked on a solo career and to date has released over a dozen studio albums. With a career lasting over five decades and sales of over 15 million records she is one of her home country's best-selling artists.

She is best known internationally for representing her home country in the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 in The Hague with the song "Petrol", just 2 points behind the entry by the band Bamses Venner of Denmark, giving the country its best result since its debut five years earlier in Stockholm.

Post-Contest, she has remained a hugely popular performer in her home country, both as a singer and as an actress.
